With today’s increased awareness of mental health concerns, the important role that pets can play in helping their owners cope with mental illness is being recognized.
If you have a mental disorder (as recognized by the DSM-V) and your pet is an integral part of your ability to cope day-to-day, then you may qualify to have your pet certified as an emotional support animal.
In order to qualify and have the proper documentation for your pet, it must be done through a licensed professional counselor. If you see a website that lets you pay for a letter without talking with a licensed professional first, steer clear of those as they do not legally qualify.
As an animal lover, mental health advocate, and licensed professional counselor, I provide assessments and letters to those who qualify for an emotional support animal.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I know if I qualify for a mental health disorder?
ESA Letters are only granted in cases of a mental health diagnosis. Some of the most common diagnoses that people need emotional support animals for are anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The DSM-V has a specific set of criteria for each diagnosis. If your symptoms are mild and do not interfere with day to day living, then a diagnosis might not be appropriate. If your symptoms lead to significant impairment in your day to day living, then you most likely meet enough criteria for a diagnosis. This is something we will discuss further and assess during our meeting.
Does my pet have to be professionally trained?
No, however it’s important that your pet be well-behaved and does not pose a safety threat. You must use discretion to ensure your pet is capable of being a safe companion.
Does this letter mean I can bring my pet with me anywhere?
No. This letter only complies with laws that allow your pet to live in your home (in cases where landlords are denying your pet living with you), or can be used on some airlines to have your pet fly with you. Many airlines no longer honor ESA letters, so please check with the specific airlines first.
How long is this letter good for?
An ESA Letter is only good for one year. To receive an updated letter, you would need to be re-evaluated.
What’s the difference between a Service Animal and Emotional Support Animal?
Service animals are trained to perform specific tasks to accommodate and keep safe a physically disabled person (ex: seeing eye dog, seizure-sensing dog). An emotional support animal is a companion animal that provides support, soothing, and comfort to a person suffering from a mental illness.
